Dear Theatre Friends, Earlier this year, Gov. Walker signed a law recognizing the second Monday of October as Indigenous People’s Day. This was a holiday formerly recognized as Columbus Day, which Perseverance Theatre has not taken as a recognized holiday because we felt it was not respectful to the indigenous people of our land to do so. The Cyanide Ball – An inspiration for TREADWELL GOLD

joshuaProductions, Season 16-17

In one of our favorite moments in Treadwell Gold, the character of Hanna–in her role as the Independence Day Goddess of Liberty–recites a poem, “Turning Rock into Gold.” The source of the poem, courtesy of Sheila Kelly’s book came from the dance program from the 1910 “Cyanide Ball,” a dance in celebration of the technology that made mining in Treadwell possible. Here is the illustrated version of the poem as printed in the dance program in 1910. It’s the 1910 version of an infographic. In rhyming quatrains, of course.

See Treadwell Gold only through July 3 at Perseverance Theatre in Juneau. Tickets are available online, and by calling 907-463-TIXS.
