Snow Child, Perseverance Theatre’s Co-Production with Arena Stage to debut in Alaska in 2018
A world premiere musical based on the novel by Eowyn Ivey and Directed by Perseverance Theatre founder, Molly Smith.
JUNEAU, AK — Eowyn Ivey’s debut novel The Snow Child, a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize, is reborn as a magical new musical that dances on the edge of legend. In the 1920s Alaskan frontier, a homesteading couple reeling from the loss of an unborn child struggles to rebuild their lives. Everything changes suddenly when they are visited by a wild, mysterious girl who embodies the dark woods that surround their cabin. In this beautiful and dangerous land, things are rarely as they appear, and what the snow child teaches them will ultimately transform them all. Featuring a vibrant and haunting score that combines backcountry roots music and contemporary musical theatre, this world premiere musical is as evocative as the land it depicts.
Snow Child runs in Anchorage, May 25-27, 2018, and in Juneau, June 9-10, 2018, as a kick-off to Perseverance Theatre’s Ruby Anniversary Season. Nearly forty years ago, Perseverance Theatre founder Molly Smith envisioned and created a professional theatre by and for Alaskans. Smith is now artistic director of Arena Stage. In a co-production with Arena Stage, Smith will direct The Snow Child, a truly Alaskan story. Molly Smith has been a leader in new play development for over 30 years. During Smith’s tenure, Arena Stage has premiered dozens of new plays including Dear Evan Hansen, now on Broadway.
Playwright John Strand adapted the novel for the stage, with roots-inspired original music by Alaskan composer Bob Banghart and Georgia Stitt. Bob Banghart is a composer and musician with deep roots in Alaskan acoustic music and Alaska history. He’s a founder of the 43-year old Alaska Folk Festival, as well as former chief curator of the Alaska State Museum. Georgia Stitt is an American musical theatre composer, conductor, director, arranger and lyricist. John Strand is the playwright in residence at Arena Stage, and is a winner of the Charles MacArthur award for playwriting.
